Hi Everyone,
Big shocker, I procrastinated in letting people know I was
moving.
Freeport-McMoRan bought Phelps Dodge in 2007, hence adding 1
mine to the 11 mines PD had. I applied in June 2008 to go to
the Freeport mine in the province of Papua in Indonesia. My
transfer came through and I arrived at site in November. I
had been in Morenci, AZ for a little over 4 years.
If anyone is ever on the other side of the world…I will be
here for at least 2 years.
There are more amenities here than in Morenci, so certain
things are easier. For instance, being in single status
accommodations means that there is a room boy that cleans
and does the laundry…also no kitchen so I get my food at the
mess hall. I don’t have to do anything domestic at all which
is superb!!!
I am taking lessons on how to drive a Toyota Land Cruiser (LWB)
in the highlands of Papua. Basically, all gravel…manual
transmission…steep hills…vehicle in 4WD Low at all times =
me failing the practical driving test. The orange ’71 Bug
was a tad bit easier.
Tembagapura, where I live, is approximately 6,000 or 7,000
feet and the Grasberg mine, where I work, is over 14,000
feet.
By the way, Jenny is having her third child in April!!! I am
coming to Rapid in May to see the new baby. I think I will
be there almost 3 weeks.
